The Village of Berkeley, IL, has begun to  move forward  with the process of creating a brand new comprehensive plan to help guide the Village’s growth and development over the next 15 to 20 years. The Village is not alone in this effort, engaging the help of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to assist in the process of creating a regional land use and transportation plan for the seven county Chicago region. The Village of Berkeley’s plan will help to inform this larger effort.

The Village of Berkeley’s previous effort was a plan adopted back in 1974. In order to meet the needs of its residents and local businesses, the Village's new plan must be updated  to reflect the pursuit of the bright future in its own motto.

How is Berkeley Developing it's Plan?

How is Berkeley Developing it's Plan?

The Village has hired Camiros, Ltd. to work with a Steering Committee made up of representatives from the Village Board, Economic Development Commission, Planning & Zoning Commission, Berkeley Public Library, Berkeley Park District, and School District 87 to draft the Plan. The Steering Committee has had some initial discussions on the issues facing Berkeley and a community vision for the future, but needs input from residents, businesses and other community stakeholders as well.

THE GOAL IS TO CREATE A COMPREHENSIVE PLAN THAT IS INCLUSIVE AND REFLECTS THE VIEWS OF ALL PARTS OF THE VILLAGE.

What is the Schedule for Creating the Plan?

What is the Schedule for Creating the Plan?

The Steering Committee held its initial meeting in January 2009 to begin a five step process that is scheduled to be completed by August.

Step 1: Establish the road map for creating the Comprehensive Plan and encouraging residents, local business and other community stakeholders to be actively involved in the planning process. (January – February)

Step 2: Establish the planning framework by analyzing existing conditions, preparing land use, transportation and community facilities maps, and documenting demographic characteristics and trends. (March – April)

Step 3: Establish a vision for Berkeley’s future that is built on broad-based community input. (April – May)

Step 4: Develop and evaluate plan alternatives. Identify potential redevelopment opportunities; determine the community’s level of comfort with potential land use change, and establish consensus around land use and transportation goals, objectives and policies. (May – July)

Step 5: Create a Comprehensive Plan document that has strong community support with projects and program initiatives that can be implemented as resources and opportunities become available. (July – August)
