The Village of Berkeley Village Hall & Police Department Renovation Project
Information about renovation progress will be posted here as it becomes available.
Village Hall & Police Station Renovation Groundbreaking
The Village of Berkeley groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday, September 9, 2011 from 6:00Pm to 8:00PM to celebrate the Village Hall and Police Station Renovation Project. Light refreshments, tours and previews of the intended plans for the Village Hall and Police Station renovations were provided to the nearly one hundred attendees.
Village Hall & Police Station Renovation Start Date and Details Beginning September 12th, the combined 1938 Village Hall and Police Station will be undergoing substantial renovations. The purpose of the renovation is to improve handicapped accessibility and public safety at the facility.
Handicapped Accessibility and Safety Improvements
To address current handicapped accessibility deficiencies, the renovation will include ADA compliant bathrooms and hallways as well as the installation of an elevator to replace the chairlift that currently takes the handicapped public to the second floor meeting room. This chairlift has been used for many years by members of the Berkeley Seniors Social Club that meets each Thursday at the Village Hall. Handicapped accessibility improvements are being funded in part by Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding received from the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and administered through Cook County. To address safety concerns at the Village Hall and Police Station, the following components will be incorporated into the renovation of the facility:
The Village Board has been working for more than three years to make the renovation a reality. The renovation will be completed in the most economical way by focusing on the shared use of facilities, multi-purpose rooms, and limited renovation to the second floor offices. The Village has diligently saved over the past 18 years in order to finance these renovations, and as a result, the Village will not be borrowing any funds nor raising taxes to complete the renovation project.

Demolition Phase of the Renovation Project Underway
The demolition phase of the
Village Hall and Police Station Renovation Project is in full
swing and has provided some early glimpses of the space
available for updating. With much of the work centered on the
previous Public Works garage and the Village main offices
located on the lower level, crews have removed the entire lobby
and staircase to the second floor to make room for the new ADA
approved elevator access from the new, spacious lobby. The
garage has seen every tool from a hammer to a bobcat in the few
days since the demolition began. Clearing the slate for the
addition of Police Department offices, cells and a prisoner
sally-port entrance, the garage space is all but recognizable
from its days as a Public Works storage garage. As
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
As you may have heard or seen, the Village Hall and Police Station are currently undergoing substantial renovation. The Village Hall and Police Station Renovation Project was kick started on September 9 with a Groundbreaking Ceremony attended by the public, the Village officials, and representatives from neighboring taxing districts. The project is expected to be completed next summer. Until that time, Village offices will be located at the Public Works building at 1201 N. Wolf Road.
The purpose of the renovation is to improve handicapped accessibility and safety at the Village Hall and Police Station. Handicapped accessibility improvements including the addition of an elevator and an ADA compliant washroom are being funded in part by a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) received from the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and administered through Cook County.
Safety improvements at the
Village Hall and Police Station will include a secure sally-port
to safely transport prisoners into a secure booking area; secure
and separate cells for the housing of male, female, or juvenile
prisoners; secure interview rooms where victims and witnesses
can be separated from prisoners and line-ups can be conducted
when necessary; a secure
Thus far, the project is approximately 20% complete. Progress to date includes interior demolition, relocation of underground utilities and construction of interior masonry walls. For more information, contact the Village Hall at (708) 449-8840.
