Snow Removal

Public Works is also responsible for maintaining safe streets during the winter months. Along with battling the elements, plow drivers often have to navigate crowded streets and slick conditions in an effort to prepare Berkeley roadways for the demands of road travelers. Residents should use these key points to prepare for winter in Berkeley:

  • Remove vehicles from public streets when approximately 2 inches of snow or more is expected to fall or sleeting/freezing roadways would require salting.
  • Please avoid driving or parking on Berkeley roadways in heavy snowstorms. Less traffic means our drivers can clear the streets of snow more efficiently.
  • Do not shovel or blow snow into public roadways.
  • If it is necessary to be outdoors, please use extreme caution. Drive slowly and watch all intersections.
  • Do not follow plow trucks too closely and use extreme caution in passing plow trucks and salt vehicles.
  • Leave plenty of room between cars and brake slowly to avoid accidents.

Remember, that vehicles must be cleared from Village streets when a snowfall of 2 inches or more is present or expected. It is unlawful for the operator of a motor vehicle to stop, stand or park a motor vehicle on any street or thoroughfare in the Village after a snowfall which has resulted in a ground accumulation of snow of two inches (2”) or more until such time as the Village has completed the plowing and clearance of said snow. Failure to do so will result in a fine as defined in the ordinance. This Village-wide parking regulation will assist the Public Works Department in clearing the streets as soon as possible and will help to make travel safer for all residents.
