Street Sweeping
Street Sweeping provides two primary benefits to the Village of Berkeley. The more obvious benefit is the collection and removal of paper, leaves, and other visible debris that collect along the curb line. This debris can block storm water inlets, causing flooding during heavy rains. An equally important, but less visible benefit is the removal of metal particles and other hazardous waste products left by passing vehicles. Although they are virtually invisible, these particles can be extremely harmful to fish and other wildlife if they reach our creeks, rivers, beaches and bays; the inevitable destination of storm water run-off. Street sweeping is an effective method of removing both the large and microscopic pollutants that collect on our Village streets.
The Public Works street sweeper will sweep streets on Village roads during the weeks in October and November. As a reminder to all residents, it is against Village ordinance to blow or sweep leaves into Village streets. Leaf disposal is part of the waste management program and should be placed at the curb on garbage pick-up days. Residents who violate this ordinance will be fined according to Village Code Enforcement regulations.
